5 ways to date online like a boss

Don’t knock them before trying, here are some ways to ace the dating scene on the interweb or the app stores

Want to try your luck on online dating apps or websites but don’t know how? Or are you once bitten, twice shy with nobody swiping right for you? Well, here’s help. “If dating is a game, online dating is a game of strategy. Message someone ‘hey’, and you’ll probably be ignored. Send the wrong emoji or apparently any at all if you’re male, and you are as good as gone. Behaviour is key to read humans,” says Sumesh Menon, co-founder and CEO, WOO dating app. So, here are some tips to make you find love in the time of Internet:

Find common ground: If your first love is pizza or Picasso, show off your interests well. A shared love for food, cooking unusual cuisines or visiting art museums are great ice-breakers and a shared common interest attracts people to you.

Keep it cheeky: Add character to your profile with interesting photos and things you enjoy. If you can’t be witty, at least keep it original. Don’t be the guy or girl who ‘lives life to the fullest’.

Keep a stock of starter questions: It’s best to start a conversation with an interesting question or funny statement such as ‘Now that we have matched, when do we elope?’ and the works. Avoid the small talk spiel to keep it interesting.

Play it cool but not too much: Let people gradually reveal their personality through a natural conversation — don’t start talking with a set agenda to find out as much as you can. It’s wise not to procrastinate replying too much either. Messages sent within the first 24 hours are twice as likely to receive a response. So don’t just collect matches — initiate a conversation.

Do not use too many Emojis: Emojis are fun but not everybody appreciates that, so try to be real and kickstart your conversation with real words. Keep the conversation going by being responsive and involved. Initiate plans to connect on the phone or in person when the timing is right.
